 BIF&ST 2023 PROGRAMME

This is the detailed programme of the 14th edition of the Bif&st–Bari International Film&Tv Festival which, placed under the prominent Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic, will take place from 24 March to 1 April 2023, organised by the Apulia Film Commission in collaboration with the Puglia Region and Puglia Promozione PO Puglia Funds FESR-FSE 2014-2020 and the collaboration of the Municipality of Bari and the Ministry of Culture. The Bif&st, created and directed by Felice Laudadio, will take place in the Petruzzelli, Piccinni, Kursaal Santalucia and Margherita Theatres and in the Van Westerhout Theatre in Mola di Bari.

German director Volker Schlöndorff, Oscar winner for the film, The Tin Drum – based on the novel of the same name by Nobel Prize winner Günter Grass, is the president of Bif&st 2023, with Ettore Scola and Margarethe von Trotta as honorary presidents.

The following programme was worked on and developed by Felice Laudadio, Enrico Magrelli, David Grieco, Marco Spagnoli, Giuliana La Volpe, Orsetta Gregoretti, Patrizia Prosperi and Francesca Turrisi (artistic direction, Rome); and by Angelo Ceglie, Alessandra Rizzi and Angela Bianca Saponari (organisational direction, Bari).

PROGRAMME ACCORDING TO THEATRE

  • Kursaal Santalucia Theatre, 24 MARCH, 6:00pm (pre-inauguration)

This beautifully restored theatre of the Puglia Region will host a special event in collaboration with Amnesty International at the pre-inauguration event on 24 March 2023:

  • Rumore – Human Vibes by Simona Cocozza, produced by Samantha Cito (Italy 2023, 58’), with the participation among others of Ivano Fossati, Carmen Consoli, Paola Turci, Daniele Silvestri, Niccolò Fabi, Modena City Ramblers, Nada, Roy Paci, Negramaro and Simone Cristicchi. Amnesty International spokesperson and communications director Riccardo Noury and musician and composer Roy Paci will speak at the end of the screening.

  • Special event – Tribute to Ugo Santalucia – 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the theatrical release of Luchino Visconti’s Ludwig, for which the producer Ugo Santalucia (Bari 1924-2000) won the David di Donatello Award for best film in 1973. Ugo Santalucia, the son of the founder of the Kursaal Theatre, Orazio Santalucia, produced over 40 films throughout his long career. To commemorate this extraordinary productive adventure that accompanied Visconti’s most famous film – starring Helmut Berger, Romy Schneider and Silvana Mangano – the Bif&st will present it in its restored 228-minute version, which will be introduced by Oscar Iarussi, Anton Giulio Mancino, Tonino Pinto and Francesco Santalucia (7:30pm, 1 April).

International panorama – The screening of the traditional competitive section will also take place at the Petruzzelli featuring 12 world or international premiere films from all over the world to be evaluated by an international jury, made up of director Jafar Panahi (Iran, honorary president); critic Jean Gili (France, president), producer Bettina Brokemper (Germany), actress Valeria Cavalli (Italy), director Salvatore Maira (Italy), director Pippo Mezzapesa (Italy) and critic Grazyna Torbicka (Poland) – that will award three prizes: Best Director, Best Actress and Best Actor. These are the 12 selected films, all of them (except 3) will be accompanied by the artists marked in bold.

The masterclasses of the seven award-winning filmmakers of the Federico Fellini Platinum Award for Cinematic Excellence, designed by Ettore Scola, will be held in the morning at about 11:00am after the screening of one of their films, with the Fellini Award being granted in the evening.   • After the screening of the film Leila’s Brothers by Saeed Roustaee (Iran 2022, 159’), the filmmakers present in Bari will express their solidarity with the Iranian filmmakers persecuted by the Ayatollah regime (28 March, 9:00am). Director Jafar Panahi will be symbolically awarded the Fellini Prize on the same evening of 28 March.
  • actor, director and writer Luigi Lo Cascio after the screening of The Ideal City (La città ideale) directed by and starring himself, his book Storielle per granchi e per scorpioni will be announced, soon to be released by Feltrinelli (29 March)

ItaliaFilmFest/Nuovo cinema italiano – Seven Italian films will be presented, evaluated by an audience-jury composed of 24 spectators and chaired by producer Donatella Palermo who will award the Ettore Scola Award to the best director and the Mariangela Melato Award and the Gabriele Ferzetti Award to the best leading actors. These are the seven selected films, six of them are world premieres. In bold are the artists who will be present:

History, Memory    

Titanus will be 120 years old in 2024 – As part of the historical segment of the Bif&st “History, Memory”, strongly endorsed by Ettore Scola, the Piccinni Theatre will host a tribute to Italy’s oldest film company, Titanus, anticipating its 120th anniversary in 2024. It was founded in Naples in 1904 by Gustavo Lombardo, then led to the peak of its success by his son Goffredo until the 2000s and currently in the hands of his grandson Guido Lombardo. Ten films that have shaped the history of Italian cinema will be presented: Le amiche by Michelangelo Antonioni (1955); Rocco and His Brothers (Rocco e i suoi fratelli) by Luchino Visconti (1960); L’armata Brancaleone by Mario Monicelli (1966); Treasure of San Gennaro (Operazione San Gennaro) by Dino Risi (1966); The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (L’uccello dalle piume di cristallo) by Dario Argento (1970); Le Bal (Ballando ballando) by Ettore Scola (1983); Troppo forte by Carlo Verdone (1987). And at the Kursaal Theatre Roma di Fellini (1972) on 26 March at 4:00pm. And at the Petruzzelli Theatre In the Pope’s Eye (Il pap’occhio) by Renzo Arbore (1990) on 30 March at 9:30am. On 1 April there will be a screening (Petruzzelli Theatre, 4:00pm) of the extraordinary documentary by Giuseppe Tornatore L’ultimo Gattopardo – Ritratto di Goffredo Lombardo (2010).

Cinema&Science – Seven morning appointments have been reserved mainly – but not exclusively – for schools, with the participation of CNR scientists and the screening of various audiovisual materials. The series will be introduced on 25 March at a meeting promoted by the Department for the Environment of Puglia Region and will conclude on 1 April (Petruzzelli Theatre) with the screening of the highly anticipated docufilm The Forest Maker (Il costruttore di foreste, 2021) by Volker Schlöndorff who at the end will discuss the subject with Antonello Pasini of the CNR. A programme of this series has been distributed to thousands of secondary students from Bari and its province who have already signed up, see below.

  • Kursaal Santalucia Theatre, 26-31 March

BariFictionF&st – This segment, endorsed by BCC Bari, will take place from 26 to 31 March and will present – following the success of the previous edition and with a new BariFictionF&st logo – an essential review of television works (TV movies, series, miniseries, docufictions, etc.) produced by major Italian and international broadcasters, primarily Rai Fiction, with the participation of the most significant artists (highlighted here in bold), meetings with the public audience as well as with the producers. The following programmes will be aired in spring, offered as Italian or international premieres:

  • Il metodo Fenoglio with Alessio Boni, from the “detective stories” by Gianrico Carofiglio
  • Un posto al sole, new episodes, with four artists present
  • Cuori with Daniele Pecci and Andrea Gherpelli, produced by Giannandrea Pecorelli, a Rai Fiction series, like Il metodo Fenoglio and Un posto al sole

Kursaal Theatre

  • To Federico Fellini, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of his death (31 October 1993), a screening of a restored version of one of his masterpieces: Roma (1972), as part of the Titanus Tribute, will be dedicated at 4:00pm on 26 March at the Kursaal Theatre. Already in 2013, Bif&st had organized for the 2oth anniversary of his death an almost entire retrospective of Fellini’s films and an exhibition of his famous drawings, inaugurated by Ettore Scola and Francesca Fabbri Fellini, as well as a series of meetings about the great director.

Film workshops: 25 March-1 April

Eight meetings for scriptwriting workshop, organized by director and screenwriter Franco Bernini, will be held in Bari in the mornings at the Margherita Theatre while actress and director Milena Mancini will hold eight acting workshops in the afternoons at the Van Westerhout Theatre in Mola di Bari, for whose availability we thank Mayor Giuseppe Colonna and the city’s municipal administration.

Piccinni and Petruzzelli Theatres

For one of the traditional and most significant segments of the festival – Cinema&Science, curated by Orsetta Gregoretti and Silvia Mattoni – seven appointments have been scheduled, dedicated especially, but not exclusively, to school students from the city and province of Bari. This initiative, realised in close collaboration with the scientific community of universities and research organisations, in particular with scientists from the National Research Council (CNR), will include seven morning meetings to be held daily at 9:30am at the Piccinni Theatre (free admission) from Saturday 25 March to Friday 31 March and at the Petruzzelli Theatre on Saturday 1 April.

The environment and climate are the key themes, sensitive topics of particular interest to the younger generation, but not only. Global warming and climate change – from melting glaciers to rising sea levels to increasing extreme meteorological phenomena and desertification – are causing significant environmental risks.

The Cinema&Science segment aims not only to raise awareness on the issue but also to promote planning initiatives in order to manage and contain the effects of climate change. The project will feature science shows, docufilm screenings and debates with scientists. Here are the themes and speakers:

Piccinni Theatre, 25-31 March (excluding Sunday 26 March)

  1. NATURE IS REBELLING (25 March)
  • SCREENING OF MONSTER MOVIES CLIPS, FROM KING KONG AND GODZILLA TO THE PRESENT DAY

We are altering the world with our evil activities, we are changing the climate, bringing certain species to extinction, and we create even more powerful and destructive weapons. We want to go to other planets to exploit their resources after having overexploited those of this planet. Nature rebels and produces monsters. Many come from the sea because the ocean depths are still largely unexplored and host beings that seem monstrous to us. Others come from the underground, or live on remote islands. And then there are those that come from outer space, perhaps to dominate us or to merely eat us, as in The War of the Worlds. The science fiction of Jules Verne had anticipated technological progress, notes Prof. Boero, “The science fiction of monsters anticipates the consequences of this progress, generating monsters that rebel against our presumed power. Sometimes they come from the sea, sometimes from underground, sometimes they live in remote regions, or they come from space.” Ferdinando Boero, biologist and ecologist at the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station and Luca Bandirali, film critic and researcher in Disciplines of the Performing Arts at the University of Salento, will discuss this topic at the end of the screening with the Puglia Region’s Councillor for the Environment Anna Grazia Maraschio and Director of ARPA Puglia Vito Bruno.

  1. MESSINA STRAIT: SEA OF LEGENDS (27 March)
  • DOCUMENTARY ON THE STRAIT OF MESSINA – MICROPLASTICS AND CLIMATE CHANGE

The making of this documentary was strongly supported by Prof. Nancy Spanò, of the University of Messina, delegate to the Scientific Initiatives for the protection of the environment and marine resources, to provide justice to our landscapes, in particular to the Strait which faces Messina. The possibility of setting up a laboratory with images and small videos of different activities (from sampling to analysis of microplastics) is being planned. Each image and video will be associated to a QR code, so that anyone can simply open their favourite images with their mobile phone. Prof. Spanò will be participating.

  • A SEA OF WASTE A THOUSAND METRES DEEP

Martina Pierdomenico, researcher at the Institute for the study of anthropogenic impacts and sustainability in the marine environment (IAS) of the CNR, will talk about the immense underwater landfill located at a depth of one thousand meters in the centre of the Strait of Messina. Images will be projected – taken with an underwater rover – showing for the first time the contamination of an ecosystem at a great depth.

  1. MELTING ICE (28 March)

Renato Colucci, researcher at the CNR Institute of Polar Sciences (ISP) will address the issue of glacial melting, which is now a real problem. Collected data and the “before and after” satellite images on the conformation of the Earth’s glaciers show an unprecedented acceleration. It is an unstoppable and increasingly rapid emergency that requires careful monitoring and targeted actions to avoid large-scale environmental and climate disasters in the short term. After a screening of a film on the subject, the researcher will intervene, explaining by way of images the situation of Italian glaciers.

  1. TORNADO HUNTERS (29 March)

Massimiliano Pasqui, physicist and researcher at the CNR Institute for Bioeconomics, will talk about tornados. Students will be able to follow an in vitro reproduction of the tornado phenomenon and watch a film on the subject.

  1. THE EARTH HAS NEVER BEEN SO HOT! (30 March)

Roberto Danovaro, is a full professor at the Polytechnic University of Marche, where he holds courses in Marine Biology, Marine Ecology and Environmental Ethics. The planet is burning. The temperature is rising as never before. Whose fault is it? Danovaro will discuss this after the screening of a film on the subject.

  1. “ALIENS” IN THE MEDITERRANEAN & NOVEL FOOD (31 March)
  • FINDINGS AND CURIOSITIES TO TELL THE STORY OF OUR SEA

Ernesto Azzurro, researcher at the CNR Institute for Biological Resources and Marine Biotechnologies, will talk about the processes of transformation of biodiversity in marine environments. A 15-min. docufilm, Il mare in pillole: 60 secondi per raccontare la sfida dei cambiamenti climatici nelle aree marine protette del Mediterraneo, will be projected.

  • NOVEL FOOD AND RESEARCH: NEW RESOURCES AND NEW OPPORTUNITIES (COOKING SHOW)

Antonella Leone, researcher at the CNR Institute of Food Production Sciences, will talk about the research activities funded by the European Community with regard to the use of new food resources, such as jellyfish. This will be followed by a cooking show with a demonstration of the culinary use of Mediterranean edible jellyfish by a professional chef.

  • THE ALIEN BLUE CRAB INVADES MEDITERRANEAN GOURMET CUISINE

Lucrezia Cilenti, researcher at the Institute for Biological Resources and Marine Biotechnology of the CNR, will talk about the invasion of alien species in the Mediterranean with a focus on Atlantic blue crab. She will show some specimens of the Callinectes sapidus species transported live in an aquarium. A chef will prepare some blue crab dishes during the event. A video projection is planned.

  1. FIGHT AGAINST DESERTIFICTION

Screening of the docufilm The Forest Maker (Germany 2021, 87’) by Oscar-winning director Volker Schlöndorff who will speak at the end of the film along with Antonello Pasini of the CNR, an expert on climate change.

Tony Rinaudo is an Australian agronomist, of distant Italian origin, who has been fighting desertification with a small group of African farmers f0r 30 years by challenging conventional reforestation ideas with his simple but effective method. The Forest Maker is the portrait of this extraordinary man whose work of a lifetime was awarded the so-called alternative Nobel Prize, the Right Livelihood Award in 2018. Rinaudo has found a way to grow trees in the driest areas of the Sahel—a work of decades that has ensured the livelihood of thousands of farmers in Africa. His method, “Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration” (FMNR), restores not only the soil but also dignity and hope. Volker Schlöndorff looks at the effect FMNR has had on the fight against desertification, often running into issues equally concerning in Europe—migration, climate change and gender justice.

Antonello Pasini is a climatologist at the CNR and professor of Climate Physics at the University of Roma Tre. He works on elaborating and applying mathematical models in the field of climate study. He is the author of numerous articles in international journals and has also published popular books, such as Effetto serra, effetto guerra. Clima, conflitti, migrazioni: l’Italia in prima linea (ed. Chiarelettere, with G. Mastrojeni) and L’equazione dei disastri: cambiamenti climatici su territori fragili (Codice Edizioni). Pasini is also an active communicator: he won the National Prize for scientific dissemination for his 2016 blog: “Il Kyoto fisso.”
